SONATA Workshop on NBS

BioSense Institute Dr Zorana Đinđića 1, Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia

Nature-based Solutions and the Living Lab

SONATA Workshop 1 Part II

BioSense Institute Dr Zorana Đinđića 1, Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia

In-situ data refining for habitat mapping. Additionally, a Digital soil mapping session will be held via Zoom.

SONATA Workshop No 2

Habitat mapping and Earth Observation workflows in openEO - Getting started with openEO for processing diverse Earth Observation datasets

NbS Spatial model development workshop

During this workshop, we will focus on the spatial model being developed to help indentify optimal locations for nature-based solutions (NbS, such as flower strips) to maximize crop yield, pollinator diversity and soil organic carbon.

Living Lab and Stakeholder role-play workshop

In this workshop, we will supplement the stakeholder list we made at the physical workshop, as well as discuss and finalize the Living Lab design, including proposed activities. During the final part of this workshop, we will conduct a role game, to try to think a little bit more like SONATA stakeholders to prepare ourselves for fruitful work in the Living Lab.

SONATA at IALE 2025 European Landscape Ecology Congress in Bratislava

SONATA coordinator, Dr Tijana Nikolić Lugonja will present abstract titled “Monitoring of Nature Infrastructure – Skill Acquisition for Nature-based Solutions”, during the session The Green Transition of European Landscapes – from Ambitious Spatial Plans to Comprehensive Land Use Changes at the European Landscape Ecology Congress in Bratislava (2-5 September). The Congress will focus on Landscape Perspectives in a Rapidly Changing World. The congress themes underscore the importance of holistic, theoretical and empirical, data-driven approaches to understanding and managing of all types of landscapes in the context of rapid environmental and societal changes.

SONATA consortium meeting in Mieres (Spain) organized by UNIOVI

SONATA team will gather at the consortium meeting organized by UNIOVI in Mieres, Spain. During this meeting, the consortium will present and discuss the task progress during the first year of the project and plan the upcoming activities. The meeting provides a valuable platform for strengthening cooperation, exchanging knowledge, and aligning strategies to ensure the successful implementation of SONATA objectives.

BIOS team visit to FIHAC

BIOS team members dr Tijana Nikolić Lugonja, Ivana Pejović, Aleksandra Gašić Čolić will visit FIHAC for a research project management training. This visit aims to strengthen BIOS’s skills in coordinating complex research projects, improving planning and reporting processes, and ensuring the successful implementation of ongoing and future initiatives. The training will also provide an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange and collaboration with FIHAC experts.

NbS Hub Webinar/workshop

One of the key outcomes of SONATA is the NBS Team (NbS-T) (Hub or centre). After previous workshops focused more on the NbS Living Lab, we are now looking more into the setup and functioning of NbS Hubs. In this workshop, two well experienced guests will present the setup, main activities, strategy, funding and other important aspects of NbS Hubs they are both involved in. After the two presentations and a shorter question session we will have a more open discussion/workshop within all the attendants. The workshop will be organized by NINA.

NbS Spatial model tool demo workshop

Online

The Workshop on NbS Spatial Tool Demonstration (in person, with online attendance) will be a hands-on event aimed at showcasing the demo version of the NbS spatial model and the associated optimization tools. During this workshop, we will focus on the challenge of (near-)optimal application of nature-based solutions (NbS), such as flower strips, to maximize crop yield, pollinator diversity, and soil organic carbon sequestration. Accordingly, the workshop will emphasize the spatial model and optimization approaches being developed to support the identification of optimal locations for NbS implementation. The event will bring together the SONATA team and other researchers working on spatial optimization tasks across different domains, from BIOS and other institutions at the University of Novi Sad, primarily with engineering backgrounds.

Pollination ecology workshop

Online

SONATA investigates how restoring seminatural grasslands can be a nature-based solution for increasing farmland biodiversity and including the abundance of insect pollinators, pollination services to crops, and thereby crop production. In this workshop guest lecturer Professor Ørjan Totland from the University of Bergen will set the stage by introducing us to the field of pollination ecology. The lecture will be followed by a hands-on exercise on the analysis of effects of pollinator abundance on crop pollination. Aim of the workshop is to familiarise participants with the field of pollination ecology and gain hands on experience from analyzing data on pollen limitation. The workshop ensures that SONATA NbS modelling is grounded not only in spatial patterns but also in ecosystem process dynamics and ecosystem service delivery.
