Technology in the Service of Nature: NbS Spatial Tool Demonstrated for Smarter Sustainable Agriculture Planning

The Workshop on NbS Spatial Tool Demonstration brought together researchers working on spatial optimization and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) across various domains.

Organized as a hands-on event, the workshop showcased the demo version of the NbS spatial model and its accompanying optimization tools developed within the SONATA project. The scientific program featured presentations of NbS spatial models previously developed at VITO, alongside optimization approaches and experiences from other research initiatives involving the SONATA team.

The event gathered members of the SONATA team, as well as researchers from the BioSense Institute (BIOS) and other institutions of the University of Novi Sad, primarily from engineering and technical backgrounds. The workshop encouraged interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and collaboration in the field of spatial optimization for sustainable land management.

Special emphasis was placed on identifying near-optimal locations for implementing NbS measures, such as flower strips, aimed at maximizing crop yields, enhancing pollinator diversity, and increasing soil organic carbon sequestration.
